Often, as CTA riders will tell you, riding the CTA can bring you surprises from the public, both good and bad. This is the nature of public transportation, where the public is part of the show.
I have a friend of mine who is blogging who has encouraged me to add more personal experiences to my writing here, so in the spirit of this post I will mention the time I was riding the No. 72 North Avenue bus, eastbound one day, on my way to the Red line El, though then it was called something else, when a young woman wearing only the tiniest bathing suit I had ever seen decided to sit next to me on the bus. I was 22 and it was very hot on the bus that day.
She was about 8 years older and clearly out of my league and the 2 silent miles we rode together until I sadly got off for the El were ingrained in my mind for a long, long time as a very pleasant CTA surprise indeed. There are those of you who might perhaps think I lost an opportunity that day. I refer you to Joao Gilberto's version of The Girl from Ipanema and rest my case.
For those of you who think after all of the arguing about transit funding for CTA in the region that there is nothing fun about riding or being a customer of CTA, here is some proof that at least some of CTA's customers have a sense of humor.
On Saturday, January 12, 2008 a group of about 70 people participated in "No Pants 2k8 CTA Chicago" organized by a New York group called Improv Everywhere - We Cause Scenes which has hosted similar No Pants events for a number of years in New York City. In addition to NYC, this year's event has included Chicago, Boston, Portland, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Baltimore, Toronto, Canada and Adelaide, Australia, at least so far.
The group, founded by Charlie Todd, sets up its events, or missions, through "underground operatives" organized via web postings, email, and facebook.com pages, cell phones, pagers and other methods to organize scenes which are supposed to be surprises for the general public.
So there could be more No Pants 2k8 events, in addition to the 10 already sprung before the year is out depending on response to what already has happened this year. On the other hand, the group has also sponsored many other varied missions, so who knows what its next Chicago mission will be? One can only hope that they will do something equally exciting on CTA, perhaps in nicer weather. I can't help wondering if their participation would have been greater in nicer weather.
Now before you get too excited, I should point out that all of the participants in these videos are wearing underwear. The objective of the event is not to shock observers, but to give them a laugh and a story to tell the people they know. Something to dine out on you might say. "Hey, you'll never guess what I saw on the Red Line Saturday!"
It probably won't hurt the story that most of the participants are young and good-looking either. Though anyone can participate, and that's the way it should be. If you look at the New York Video at the end, where the mission has a longer track record, you will see that the crowd is not only much larger, but much more diverse.
The first video, is the CLTV, well, coverage of the Chicago event by the local cable news outfit. I note the pun at the end that it was pretty nippy weather out there.
The second video is footage that seems to be from someone from the group, or several some-ones in the group and seems to record the journey of the train that picked up the participants station by station as the red line train they all joined proceeded back North picking them back up. During this trip, interestingly, they were joined by a few instant volunteers who got into the spirit of the event.
The group was not a rowdy group by the way. Part of the event was they all ignored each other and their own pants-less state. If anyone asked them why they were wearing no pants, they were supposed to look down and say something on the order of "Oh, I forgot!".

This post would not be complete without coverage from New York City where 900 people participated. This video, compiled by participants was very professionally done and has lots of priceless reactions from New Yorkers.
I can't help noticing, how clean Chicago's CTA looks after seeing this video. I think the CTA mantra of Clean, Safe, On-Time and Friendly has really paid off over the years.

After feedback from my most frequent readers (family members, bar patrons and hobos with T1 connections) I have made several changes to the way the automatic stream of YouTube.com videos stream to The Peter Files Blog of Comedy.
Before changing the content stream formula, I started by editing my blog template to move the video window to after title and the text in each post to make it easier for subscribers and regular readers to skip the videos and get right into the original content of the blog.
I then went to YouTube.com and changed the key words that triggered the videos streamed here from a list of random comedy key words to a list of comedy celebrities that I knew had content on YouTube.
Oddly this has resulted in an almost unanimous stream of Obama Girl - Amber Lee Ettinger videos, despite her presence near the end of the list. (see below) Perhaps it is the huge interest in the election, or her own huge popularity, but I find it odd that call for Obama girl videos is eclipsing the likes of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and the others on the list. While I certainly don't mind all the cute videos, all the political videos was not what I had in mind for this spot, and I wanted to mention that and thought I would let you know that I am trying to fix this.
Warning! Try This Cool Trick at Your Own Risk! But boy will you want to try it at least once.
Will doing this void your Apple Care warranty? Almost certainly, so wait until its done with, I guess. If you worry about things like this, you can't afford to try stunts like this.
Fuses Blown? Power Out? Got to Have Some Tunes?
Have an Onion? About 2 cups of Gatorade TM or another electrolyte source? A screwdriver or pointy stick? A USB iPod charging cable? Something to hold the onion while it absorbs your electrolyte. Something to dry the onion with. Also good for when you are trapped by the bad guys in that native hut and watching and old episode of MacGyver might help you figure out to get free (you will need to have already purchased it from the iTunes store though or have "MacGyvered" an internet connection).
This video can show you how to get about 15 minutes per onion and cup of extra power for your iPod the MacGyver way, that is the cool, cheap and easy way.

Tom G. specialized, at friends' weddings, at serving up, instead of the wedding cake, the wedding Pi. He would come up to the mike and announce just that, take a pause and begin:
Tom recited Pi, "3.14159...." to about 100 places with full dramatic range, sparing no punches, high drama, low drama, comedy, tragedy, cragedy, all within the recitation of these numbers.
Alas, after surviving testicular cancer, Tom's heart succumbed to the effects of weakness from chemotherapy while he partied all night long in Barcelona (typical work night) on his new dream consulting job as an Apple consultant.
At least Tom got a bite of Apple pie before he moved on. So to me this video is extra screamingly funny. It's not just a recitation of numbers, but a whole commentary on numbers, numerology and who might care about Pi and how far a normal person might take it. Very creative. You'll really enjoy it. Trust me, I know Comedy when I feel it.

Comic and mom Anita Renfroe has condensed everything a mom might say to her kids in 24 hours into less than 3 minutes - to the tune of the William Tell Overture.
It's not just that she hits all the Mom chords here.
It's not just that she manages to capture all the things that good Mom's say in their brilliance and sometimes to their shame - but it worked.
It's not just that the William Tell Overture, the theme song for the "Lone Ranger", get it (?), works on us to make this subliminally funnier.
Ultimately, its the sheer confidence, joy and zest that Renfroe takes in her ultimate proclamation that brings the piece home to us as a masterpiece of comedy and commentary on the life of Mom's today.

It's been quite awhile since actor Tom Wilson played Biff in the "Back to the Future" trilogy, yet, fans keep on recognizing him, and always seem to have questions for him, the same questions, the very same questions, for more than 20 years now.
Rather than go insane, like some actors we could think of, Wilson has taken the funny approach of putting them all in a song, and releasing them onto the internet so that we can learn the answers to these questions, and perhaps even offer him a job in a movie, if I read the intent of the agent information at the end of the clip correctly.

Road rage.
We hear about it from time to time.
Born out of impatience and/or stupidity and rudeness it can lead to serious, deadly, or in these cases, I hope funny consequences in The Peter Files.
Consider if you will, the case of an elderly lady, tired and grumpy, just trying to get home after a day that has clearly worn her out. She may be a pedestrian, but when confronted with impatience and road rage, she knows just how to strike back in a way that will make the impatient driver of this hot rod think twice before blaring his horn at a senior in a right-of-way crosswalk again!
She gets away with a lot here, but what's the fellow going to do in front of witnesses?
There are two more videos I'd fit in here but they don't meet my standards for SFW, or for younger or more sensitive viewers because of language problems and or violence, but they do provide some laughs, so I have provided the links.

If you have not been a fan of the online video websites where you can upload and see non-adult amateur video, you may have missed this new trend in uploaded videos.
Video geniuses add a tab or two of Mentos candy to bottles of Diet Coke and watch the resulting explosive reaction, far greater than you get with baking soda and vinegar, with amusement and glee.
I'm not sure who started this current trend, but this video may darn well finish it. Called the Mentos Diet Coke show was originally submitted by Nieuwszicht to YouTube.com, this video takes the "pop a Mentos candy into a liter bottle of Diet Coke and run so you don't get wet" joke to the level of an art form as they bring us a fountain of Diet Coke and raise it to an art form.
While not exactly Buckingham Fountain, their Diet Coke show IS worth watching with a well-timed and amusing array of effects that was good enough to get the group on Late Night with David Letterman.
Add the white raincoats and soundtrack and you have something special here. If you like it, send your friends here to see it!
The kiddies are already trying this at home, so I am not sure what good a warning will do! But if you do want to spend the money to try this at home, do wear a raincoat, protect your eyes with good eye protecting goggles from the hardware store, and be carefull, watching out for flying objects. Really, don't do this at home.
Kudos to Nieuwszicht for having not only one of the best videos out, but one of the hardest to spell, thus reducing the chance of imitation. LOL!
Of course, if their success leads someone to top them, so be it! Only greater laughs are in our future.

If you've missed the Apple and PC commercials go to Apple.com to see them first - they point out the many, many advantages of Macs over PC's in many areas: user friendliness, graphics, fun, lack of crashing, etc.
These brillint and hysterically funny parodies, produced by YouTube.com contributor ItsJustSomeRandomGuy parody the PC Vs Mac TV commercials and pit rival publishers DC Comics and Marvel Comics through their respective Superheroes Superman and Spiderman, both of which have had recent movie experience.
The rivalry between the two publishing houses has gone on for decades. Marvel Comics produces or has produced Spiderman, X-Men, The Fantastic 4, Thor, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and many other gritty strips.
DC Comics has a long history of publishing including Batman, Superman, Superboy, Supergirl, Catwoman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow. the short lived, Forever People, and The Shadow of the 70's and more recently, Krypto - The Super Dog, currently a staple of the current WB Saturday lineup, though Krypto's comic book seems to have stalled after 5 or 6 issues, possibly because his main audience is aged 4-8 and a bit too young to buy comics for themselves..

These videos have cast Marvel in the Mac role, suggesting that DC comic characters are lame compared to the Ma rvel Super heroes, but in the Marvel vs DC comic book conflict I have always leaned towards towards DC, though I read pretty much everything I could get my hands on.
There used to be a small store a half block west of the Rexal Drugs west of Ellis at 79th Street in Chicago in the 60's, a little hole in the wall really. The owner would buy new a 12 cent comic book for 7 Cents and sell it for 10, a used one for 3 and sell it for 5, and 80 page or a 100 page giant for 10 cents and sell it for 15. My brother and I could pool our allowances and through judicious recycling, could strech our combined 45 cents allowance into quite a bit of weekly reading, even if we spent a nickle or dime on candy.
The big battle was not to spend 12, (later 13) cents for a brand new comic book, though we often could not help ourselves. Trading at straight value was of course a good deal, but this was where relative value of comics came in and the DC/Marvel controversy would come in.
Generally, except for Spiderman and the Fantastic Four, DC Comics were preferred to Marvel, at least a bit, so in multi-issue trading, you often got an extra issue if you were canny. Of course, if you had DC 100 page giants (or 80 page giants which they published instead when they were trying to keep from raising the face cost of the comic books) Marvel often had no equivelent. And so you could get extra issues that way.
Then there were always cross-overs to consider. The Marvel heroes did not cross-over nearly as much as the DC heroes did at first. So that gave us a lot more to buy.

We have for you today, a battle between two comedy videos. One, the very recently released video presentation of the emailed routine "Hu's on first?", a political roast of George Bush and Condi Rice, and the other the classic Abbott and Costello baseball routine "Who's on first?". Please feel free to tell me in comments which you think is funnier, you don't have to register to make a comment. I only remove ads or ones with obscenities not in keeping with the SFW nature of this blog.
One of our posts that gets the most hits, is the "Hu's on First" bit that I posted in March of 2005, based on an email that was forwarded by my friend DZ who is ever faithful in forwarding the best of jokes making the rounds.
One nice part about the post is that it not only has the new joke about George and Condi, but has a direct link to the Abbot and Costello radio routine about baseball which is much funnier than the George Bush version.
The Bush version has pointlessly added a few insensitive lines with no real comedic value. See if you can spot them.
Now that you have seen the copy, here's the original. I think you will agree that there is no competing with masters like Abbott & Costello.
Now wasn't that refreshing? Nothing like comedy from the masters. What timing, emotion, the sense that Abbott could be killed at any moment because Lou was so upset but of course never would be so much as touched by his age old friend. Ah, what comedy was meant to be.
Compare that to the Bush, video: it was the cracks about Condi's race and ebonics that almost made me ignore it. It wasn't in the original script, and added nothing of real comedic value to the video. Certainly no laughs like we saw in Abbott and Costello's original. If the video maker had worked harder, I bet he could have gotten around them. Of course, who knows, perhaps I got a pre-censored version by someone who the lines grated on; but there were other differences in the script - so I suspect not.
But I decided to keep it in just to illustrate the point that you can add ignorance and insensitivity to a bit without adding a bit of humor, while adding humor takes talent and brilliance.

Do you remember your first robot? What was it? Tobor? Robbie? Gigantor the Space Age Robot? One of Superman's robot doubles stashed in the Fortress of Solitude?
I admit it, I love robots. They appeal to the inner geek side of me that makes me dig into the code side of being a blogger. This started well before Star Trek (age 9). Robot fever has been with me since I was 3 or 4.
My fascination with robots probably started with a movie robot called Tobor, a space robot I first saw in a 1954 movie called Tobor the Great, on Family Classics, a Sunday evening TV show that ran on WGN in the 60's and 70's in Chicago. Family Classics ran "Tobor" regularly, perhaps four times a year or more. I was hooked.
Robots were cool and that was that.
Of course Tobor was primitive compared to the Robot on the original Lost in Space TV series. His concern and protection for Will Robinson, about my age at the time, was enough to make him a hero figure to me, albeit not as great as Batman or Superman. After all, who wanted to grow up to be a robot? It was impossible.
Still, you could want a robot to be your friend and protect you from hostile aliens that wanted you to clean your room. Wanting a robot, that was key.
As time went by my robot fever was well fed by my insatiable appetite for books, including the Asimov Robot stories, but any science fiction, any fiction in fact would do back then. In fact, I read just about everything until the local librarian had to grudgingly and carefully let my into the adult section of books. (At that time - to me - adult just meant non-juvenile. I was 8, after all.)
I continued to be intrigued by the idea of having my own robot through these books and all of the other stories in Asimov's and Analog and whatever science fiction I could get my hands on, including comic books. So, Lt. Commander Data was a great android, but hardly my first vision of a mechanical man. By the by, I include Superman's robots in the pantheon of Robotic literature even if no one else seems to do so...
Ever since those early days, I have wanted my own robot. As impressive as the ones on the market have been lately, they have still not been what I wanted, but robots keep getting smarter, cooler and cheaper, so one day I may actually buy one.
Assuming I don't build one first (take that snide engineers out there! I know what you were thinking - I have a pocket protector somewhere and I know how to use it!)
This post started out as an idea that I would show videos of different robots from the Consumer Electronics Show (2007) and other sources - since Robots are cool. That fell by the wayside when I discovered:
I'm sure it has flaws, but Systec' Akazawa'sPlen the Desktop Robotappears to be the iRobot of Japanese Robots. For more detailed specs see the Akazawa home page and their media public site.
I will show you some other robots in a post sometime soon, but as you will see, I was knocked out and amused by Plen's roller skating and skateboarding antics, which were controlled as far as I could tell, in real time.
Plen is 1.5 pounds of Bluetooth enabled robot that stands a proud 8.9764 inches tall. Plen can walk, bend, stand, bounce back from all sorts of falling problems, pick things up, and well, I don't want to steal from the video surprises below.
Plen both charming and is Plen-ty of fun, that is for sure. To say that I was most impressed is putting it lightly. Billed as a desktop Robot he is just that. Though I cannot imagine anyone getting much work done the first few days Plen is in the office. All he needs now is a karaoke speaker to be the perfect mix of party entertainment. Imagine Plen on top of your table, your voice coming out of his speaker as he does Sinatra like moves.
Well, that's my Plen, anyway. But he has no speaker now. So that will have to wait, but with Bluetooth you could stand him on your speakers and who would know who was singing? I can't wait for the first YouTube video of Plen Singing Karaoke style! LOL
If you visit the Plen PR website, which I recommend, despite the jaunty techno tune, be sure to check out the media link to Japan's Robot Life Magazine. It may be mostly in Japanese (Kanji script), but the photos tell you a lot about where the Japanese robot fad is headed, and so us.
So among robots, I plen to show you Plen first. I picked up a series of videos from around the web. In this first one there is nothing wrong with your sound, this one has no background sound, that's because it was uploaded to YouTube from the Plen website which has a bouncy little techno tune always going in the background. Well, that's enough to give me a yen for the Plen, but I am afraid its going to take quite a lot of Yen to get a Plen, that is, 262,500 Yen (at current exchange rates that comes out to a hefty $2,168), assuming you can even get it shipped into the U.S. (for the approximate daily exchange rate type in Google "convert 262,500 yen to dollars".)
But if you'd like to try to pre-order one and have the cash, to get the order form, at the Plen Store. The link for the translated page did not work but you can try submitting it to Babel Fish via the link on the sidebar, but basically they are asking for Name, company, address, email, etc. Uncheck the box if you don't want email from them in Japanese.
Be forewarned, the initial Plen production run was only 50 and a good deal of Japan is in line ahead of you! "You may want to do something else while you wait, like..."
While the Plen has no sensors and does not seem to be in itself programmable it still has many pluses. The Plen's is bluetooth capacity enables means that you can run it through a cell phone or a notebook. Its size makes it truly a desktop robot so it is not so big that you can't bring it to work to pass notes under cubicle walls (presuming that the inner walls don't go to the floor), and you may be able to program it to do all sorts of fun things while you are away from your desk. Or in it. Hey, keep that spy cam out of its paws! That's one sure way to wind up in the plen-itentiary!
And if you haven't noticed by now you must be reading in another language, I love the Plen's puntential. Rolling on the floor gagging out loud as you may be. (ROTFGOL?)

Plen, which is a relatively new robot with only 50 in production so far, has climbed to Number 7 of 26 in Japan's Robot Life Online 2006 - 2007 Reader Robot Awards. How high it will go once in mass production is uncertain, but like most electronic items, its price will likely fall as time passes, enhancing its popularity and use.

Every President has had a reputation for public speaking, one way or another. Calvin Coolidge was known for saying very little. When a man came up to him and said: "President Coolidge, I have a bet that I can get more than three words out of you." Coolidge is said to have turned to him and said, "You Lose".
Lincoln and Jefferson were known as great public speakers. Even Clinton, was known as a gifted public speaker, charming, smooth, even if many did not like what he said and did.
Yet we are fortunate today to have a president that sets new standards for great moments in Presidential Speeches, boldly defining his own standards that surely will not be forgotten for generations. These moments, reported by the The Late Show with David Letterman have been compiled together in a short video by legendary YouTube.com video compiler Stonetheforbidden.

By the middle of the fourth quarter it became clear that the 2006-2007 American Football NFL Football Season would be remembered in Chicago as the year the Chicago Bears won the NFC Championship.
Yes, there was that Super Bowl thingy that year after, where the Bears set the record for the first opening kick return for a touchdown, but in the end, Chicago was proud of the Bears, da Bears, for bringing home the National Conference Championship win.
Some have already muttered "Next year, next year," but I think that they are throwing the Bears wins out with the bath water. THe Chicago Bears played in the Super Bowl this year and to do that they had one of their greatest seasons ever.
This last game was marred by bad weather, and perhaps atypical play. No one Bear can be singled out for poor play, in many ways the difference between victory and loss in this game was just the way the ball bounced, and I hope next year, the Bears will be there to see it bounce their way next time.
Funniest commercial. I missed many of them working on this blog and listening to this broadcast via the NFL's free link to Satellite Radio coverage which seemed to be nearly entirely commercial free. This allowed me to hobble painfully downstairs to see important plays and still keep some blog re-organizing going.
But I did see one commercial that had to be one of the evening's funniest for those who were aware of the long-term feud between David Letterman and Oprah that viewers were led to believe were settled last year when Oprah appeared on the Late Show to bury the hatchet (not in Dave's neck though).
According to this ad, promo, whatever, things seem to have improved even more than we thought...
That commercial is not, so far, available for replay on the NFL site, but most of the others are at CBS.com's NFL Superbowl website that has a special section with a media player player dedicated to replaying the commercials. You can view them there by quarter or by advertiser. So if the favorite part of the game for you this year might have been the commercials. Viola! Here they are, except for the locals and CBS promos.
For Bears fans it was frustration to the nth degree after about the 1st quarter. To Colts fans, a come from behind and win hugely exciting. I bet that they are saying "next time too".
As for the Bears, they still will always know that they were there. And I will always believe that it was not really fair that the game was not here where the frigid weather would have given them the true home team advantage that they deserved. Not the Miami monsoon weather they got.
